Last week our Directional Leadership Team went away for our third off-site of the year and I was surprised to learn how well we're doing. I guess I was surprised because I haven't been feeling (that's the key word here, feeling) like things were going well. So I basically asked the guys "Why does doing so good feel so bad?" And as we discussed the answer to that question, here's what we realized. So this is why doing so well feels so bad. And I bring this up so that we can all make a … [Read more...]
Change: Life’s Only Constant
Both my personal experience and leadership intuition is telling me that with the launch of our Agawam location, change is coming. The growth we’re believing God for there, when realized, will shake things up, and in this lesson I will do my best to prepare your minds and hearts for what I believe is coming, which again, is change. There are many people over the years who have written about change. For example… From these writings (and others like them) it becomes clear that if we … [Read more...]
Aim to Get Better, Not Bigger
In an interview between Joe Rogan and Jimmy Donaldson (aka, MrBeast), Donaldson masterfully illustrated the importance of focusing on getting better vs getting bigger. In his experience, when he focuses on making one of his videos 10% better, it doesn't result in a 10% increase in views, rather a 300% increase in views. Put another way, if he was going for 1,000,000 views, by making the video 10% better, it doesn't get him 1,100,000 views, rather 4,000,000 views (a 300% increase). Therefore, … [Read more...]
The Art of Measuring Backwards
I finished a book this past Friday called 10x is Easier Than 2x by Dan Sullivan and Benjamin Hardy that was recommended to me by one of my board members and I loved it. It was choked full of interesting and helpful things, and near the top of the list is what I'll be sharing today, which is the author's instruction to measure backwards. Let me explain... As leaders we strive to achieve ideals. We read books, attend conferences, do site-visits, seek wise counsel, and join coaching networks, … [Read more...]
Core Four: Educate
In 2023 we placed a major emphasis on our Core Four - the four core behaviors we want to see in all New Day staff. Last year we shared what the core four was and gave out prizes to help reinforce the behaviors we wanted to see. Now unfortunately, we can't keep the prize wheel going, but I do want to keep the momentum going, so this year I'm going to cover one of our core four each quarter. And today we're covering "educate." I've done 15 years of coaching and one of the most valuable lessons … [Read more...]
A Biblical Basis for Seeking Wise Counsel
I dedicate a good chunk of time each month to seeking wise counsel from other leaders who are more experienced, have greater knowledge and lead larger churches than our own. Here’s ten reasons why: If you lead anything, it is imperative that you regularly seek wise counsel. People who have already done whatever it is you're looking to do... Listen...when we fail to seek wise counsel the result is pain. Personally, I like avoiding pain. Personally, I like being successful. … [Read more...]
The Daily Check-In
As you all know, if you’re full-time at New Day, you’re required to do a daily check-in with your supervisor, sharing your high-level priorities for the day. And today I’m writing on this topic because if you’re not careful, you can easily begin viewing the daily check-in as a chore, that’s for your supervisor’s benefit, instead of as a very helpful tool (for your own benefit). Now just to be clear, the daily check-in does indeed serve a purpose for your superior. It lets him/her know … [Read more...]
Why We Fail to Raise Up Other Leaders
Every church leader knows the story of Exodus 18 - how Moses used to do everything himself, but then switched to raising up others to help lead. It's hard to read a book on leadership or attend a pastor's conference without someone covering this all important topic. But what so few ever mention are the manifold reasons why most leaders never make the switch. Well, I'm so happy to have finally come across a book that specifically addresses this issue, called The Multiplication Effect by Mac Lake. … [Read more...]
The Best of What I Read in 2023
In this post I'm sharing the most helpful and interesting things I learned from some of my favorite books read in 2023. Benefit to me: My main takeaways in one place for easy reference. Benefit to staff: By understanding what I've read you will better understand my leadership and better understand the "why" behind the "what" at New Day. 1. No Rules Rules by Reed Hastings 2. A CEO Only Does Three Things by Trey Taylor 3. Atomic Habits by James Clear 4. The Feiner Points of … [Read more...]
My Drive and Think Days
If you look at my Google Calendar you'll see that I carve out four days per year (once per quarter) to just drive and think. In this post I'll share how this came to be and why you should do the same. I believe it was 2021 that I was called for jury duty. I didn't bring my laptop because I assumed I'd be busy deciding someone's jail sentence or innocence. But guess what? I wasn't selected! I was chosen instead to sit in a room all day, in case they needed an alternate or in case a new jury … [Read more...]
