Productivity Squared

March 3, 2015 By Mike Leave a Comment

In Dale Dauten's The Gifted Boss I'm learning about a concept he calls "productivity squared." The basic idea of this concept is that you really want to make sure you hire someone you don't have to manage too much so that productivity can be doubled. Here are the repercussions of hiring someone you have to spend a lot of time managing: Pastor works 10 hours a day and naturally wants to get some help. So he convinces his boss to let him hire an assistant. Now the pastor is a manager, and with … [Read more...]

How to Know You Made a Good Hire

February 26, 2015 By Mike Leave a Comment

In Dale Dauten's book The Gifted Boss he helps an employer know when he/she has hired the right person. You've hired the right person when you're crazy about them. You've hired the right person if you lie awake at night thanking God that they work for you. You've hired the right person when you lie there worrying that they might leave to work for someone else. You've hired the right person when you spend time thinking of how you can make them happier. This resonated with me because this is … [Read more...]

Hire Special Talent

February 24, 2015 By Mike Leave a Comment

Great sports teams search the world for special talent. Rarely, does special talent come as the result of a 'walk on.' One way to hire is to post a job and interview candidates. This is akin to trying to find special talent in the crowd of 'walk ons.' Another approach is to search the world for special talent. People with special talent are almost never unemployed looking for a job. They are almost always already working somewhere, being quite successful at whatever it is they do. This is the … [Read more...]

How to Get Bigger

February 19, 2015 By Mike Leave a Comment

Don't focus on getting bigger. Focus on getting better. If you focus on getting better, you'll get bigger. Here's four questions we constantly ask ourselves at New Day about everything we do: What went right?  What went wrong?  What was missing?  What was confusing?  We ask this after each Sunday and after every special event (i.e. after a baby dedication, a water baptism, a volunteer appreciation dinner, etc). It's by asking these questions that you figure out how to do it better next … [Read more...]

The Importance of Two Months Reserves

February 17, 2015 By Mike Leave a Comment

It's been a snow filled winter here in New England! As a result, many pastors have had to cancel church - some for a couple weeks in a row. And as every pastor knows, when you cancel church, many people don't make up their giving (i.e. give next week what they would've given this week had church not been canceled). Even when most of the church gives online, you still can expect about half the normal offering when you cancel. Well this is one of many reasons that at New Day we keep two months … [Read more...]

12 Questions for Sermon Run Through

February 12, 2015 By Mike 2 Comments

In a previous post I talked about the benefits of a sermon run through (to read that post click here). In this post I want to share with you the twelve questions I ask my staff after sharing my message with them on Thursday (the Thursday before I preach the message). Tell me what you liked about the message? What resonated with you the most? Why should people care about this topic? "Thanks God it's over!" or "Wow, is it over already?" If it was long, where can I cut? Are there pictures with … [Read more...]
